Joseph Squiers

July 2, 1942 - June 6, 2016

Joseph Orin Squiers was born on July 2, 1942, in Belle Plain, IA, the son of Richard Squiers and Ruth Fitzgerald Squiers.
Joe graduated from Notre Dame High School, in Cresco, IA in 1960. He then graduated from Waterloo Barber College in 1962. He married Ardys Young on June 17, 1961, at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco, IA. Joe and Ardy welcomed three children: Joe, Kris (Kent) Larsen, and Deb (Wayne) McFarland, who gave him his beloved grandchildren and great-grandson: Devin (Adam and Camdyn), Chelsea, Abby (Dylan) and Mitchell, and his step-granddaughters, Lara and Elizabeth.
Joe was currently employed at Waterloo Barber College (College of Hair Design) as an educator and past owner, and at Hair Gallery & Hair Replacement Studio as a barber stylist. Joe lived life to the fullest. He loved spending time with his family, which extended far beyond his biological family into the many lives he touched as a friend, barber stylist and educator. The Annual Squiers Family Golf Tournament was one of the highlights of his year. For over 50 years he had high hopes of taking the coveted first place trophy, which happened only once. His career as a barber stylist/educator touched the lives of many people, all who kept a special place in his heart. His favorite past time was spending time with the love of his life. He and Ardy have been together since he was 14 years old, and the love they shared only became stronger over those years.
Joe passed away at the age of 73, on Monday June 6, 2016, at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home from complications of a stroke. Joe is preceded in death by his father and his maternal and paternal grandparents. Joe is survived by his wife, Ardy; mother Ruth of Belle Plaine; his three children, all of Waterloo; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-grand son; brothers Dick (Julie) of Marshalltown, Dave (Linda) of Gilbert, Jim (Linda) of Belleview, Tom (Sue) of Lone Tree, Tim (Tami) of Belle Plaine; his sisters Sue (Jim) Berger and Mary (Steve) Young both of Cedar Rapids; mother-in-law Wilma Gardner of Lakeville, MN; brother/sisters-in-laws Ken (Emily) Young of Sugarland, TX, Phyl (John) Evans of Burnsville, MN and Pat (Kevin) Upham of Lakeville, MN as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 7:00 PM on Sunday at Parrott & Wood Chapel of Memories, following the visitation. Burial will be in Mt Olivet Cemetery in Waterloo. Please direct memorials to Cedar Valleys Hospice.
