John Milton

May 31, 1925 - April 20, 2016

John was born in Des Moines to Kathryne and Leander Milton on May 11, 1925.  He graduated from North High School in 1943 and was a letterman in basketball, football, and baseball.  John enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1943 to 1946 aboard the U.S.S. St. Louis.  He married Dorothy Darlene Mains on September 3, 1949, and together they raised three children.

John’s passions in his early adult life involved bowling with his wife, and scouting and little league with his children.  The second half of John’s life was filled with tennis and traveling the country with Dorothy’s bowling hobby.  He dominated his age brackets winning tennis tournaments almost every week.  He was inducted into the Iowa Tennis Hall of Fame in 1985 and was named Iowa’s Tennis Player of the Year in 1986.  His frequent number one ranking in the Midwest continued through most of his tennis career.

John was preceded in death by Dorothy, his wife of 63 years; his parents; four brothers, Lee, Harry, Frank, and Richard; and sisters, Kathryn and Agnes.

Surviving John are two sisters, Florence and Jessie; children, Steven, Mark, and Janet Craig; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.  John was a devoted husband and father.

Rest in peace Father, we love you.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Greater Des Moines Tennis Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.
