John Donald Westlake passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at Valley View Village in Des Moines, Iowa. There will be a gathering at Valley View Village, 2571 Guthrie Ave. in Des Moines on Saturday, March 26 at 1:00 p.m. to celebrate John’s long and happy life.

John was born to Gladys (Webster) and Sears Westlake in Tacoma, WA on April 29, 1926. He was the second son among two brothers (Paul and David) and four sisters (Lois, Miriam, Esther, and Imogene). John was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy stationed primarily in Guam. In later years he partnered with his brother Paul to become builders known as the Westlake Brothers. He married his second wife Odessa (the love of his life) and together they moved to Arkansas and built a beautiful home and acreage they both dearly loved. John was a poet, skilled carpenter, and master gardener and until recent years always had a wonderful garden which he shared with family and friends.

John is survived by his loving and extensive family of his wife Odessa Westlake; his children: Wayne (Jan) Westlake, Sondra Bertsch, Brad Westlake, Pete (Carol) Llamas, Janean (Jeff) Fleshman, Odessa (Larry) Perler, Tom (Christine) Llamas, and Jim (Lori) Llamas; his siblings: Paul (Donna) Westlake, David (Eunice) Westlake, and Imogene Bedwell; grandchildren: Jeremy Bertsch, Jason Bertsch, Keri (Steve) Rossner, Bryan (Cassie) Westlake, Neil (Jami) Saunders, Jessica Llamas, Gina (Jason) Erickson, Maria (Dennis) Rickert, Paul (Emily) Saunders, Pete (Lindsey) Llamas III, James Llamas II, and Traci Llamas; 20 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
