John was born on May 19, 1932 in Iowa Falls, IA to Thomas W. Buckton and Thelma C. Buckton Frost. At a young age, John moved with his family to Waterloo, IA. He graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1950. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1952 and in 1953 was honorably discharged.

He graduated from Drake University in Des Moines, IA in 1962 with a degree in business administration while continuing his career with Deere and Co., and retired in 1981 as a director of Quality Control at the John Deere Des Moines Works.

John was involved with United Way, Junior Achievement, a 50-year member of Acanthus Lodge No. 632 and was an Elder and 50-year plus member of Westminster Church.

While John was happiest with a golf club or a fishing pole in his hand, he was most content to be with his family as a loving and respected husband, father and grandfather.
