Jewel M. Kohler was born July 15, 1916, in Hawkeye, Iowa, the daughter of John and Mabel (Smith) Hennig. She graduated from high school and worked as a telephone operator. Jewel was married to Carl A. Kohler on June 11, 1938, in Nashua, Iowa. Carl served in the U.S. Navy so they spent the early years of their life travelling. They later made their home in Waterloo where they raised their three children. Jewel was a homemaker, though she later worked for St. Paul Methodist Church of Waterloo, as a custodian. In her spare time she enjoyed bowling, fishing, sewing, reading, and volunteering at St. Paul Methodist as a cook for the Thursday Fellowship Dinners. Jewel was fun-loving and adventurous. She celebrated her 100th birthday on July 15, 2016. Her last great adventure was a motorized parachute ride and a luncheon with the governor!
Jewel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl on March 19, 1979; 2 sons, James (Red) Kohler and Chris Kohler; a grandson, Steve Kohler; 3 sisters, Beulah Hoyt, Flora Rigby and Ann Fordyce; 2 brothers, Chris Hennig and Tom Hennig. She is survived by her son, John (Lin) Kohler of California; 2 daughters-in-law, Shirley Kohler of Waterloo and Lori Kohler of Oregon; 4 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
