After years of caring and praying for others, it is now time to return the love to Janice Theresa DePhillips, who was called home to her Savior in the early hours of Wednesday, March 29, after emergency surgery at Iowa Methodist Hospital. On January 30, 1952, she was born into the loving family of Michael and Theresa DePhillips. Throughout her 65 years, the center of her life was always her family and her faith. The highlight of her life, without question, was her daughter, Jessica. She loved her daughter unconditionally until her last breath and will live eternally through her grandchildren, Alyx and Jon.
Jan always gave of herself as a mother and grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, always reaching out to others. People naturally gravitated to her warm personality and, of course, to her meatballs and chili at the frequent family functions. Forever her father’s daughter, she could make everyone feel welcome, valued and included.
She graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy, attended Colorado State University, and ran various businesses in the Des Moines area from the Onion Ring Restaurant to Jan’s Candyland to Des Moines Floral & Greenery.
Jan was preceded in death by her mom and dad, Theresa and Mike DePhillips. She will be missed, lovingly remembered, and cherished by her daughter, Jesi DePhillips and her grandchildren, Alyx and Jon Purvis; brothers and sisters Judy (Dan) Towers, Diane DePhillips (Mike Bean), Mick (Jean) DePhillips, Perry (Laura) DePhillips, Jim DePhillips (her “Jimbo” who she continues to watch over); nieces and nephews Jenny, PJ (Pete), Katie, Joe, Chris, Kevin, Tony, Andy, Mike, Matt, Jamie and Tyler; six great nieces, 12 great nephews, one great, great nephew; 72 first cousins and countless friends, many of whom she called family.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, April 1, at her beloved parish, St. Theresa Catholic Church, Merle Hay Rd. and University Ave., Des Moines. The family will receive friends from 9:30am until the Mass begins at 10:30am. A luncheon will be held immediately following at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to a fund for the future of her grandchildren. Checks made out to Jessica DePhillips for Alyx and Jon.
