Janice Ann Holmes was born May 17, 1942, in Waverly, Iowa, daughter of Melvin “Shorty” and Alice (Remley) Holmes. She grew up and attended schools in Plainfield, graduating with the Class of 1960. Janice then attended Upper Iowa University graduating in 1964. She earned her Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of Northern Iowa. Janice worked at various places as a Research, School and Public Librarian. She enjoyed giving back to her community by serving on a variety of community organizations and served as a Senior Companion through Hawkeye Community College. Janice was a very active member at St. Paul’s UMC while her health allowed and was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Plainfield. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing and gardening but her passion was genealogy.
Janice passed away on Monday, May 1, 2017, at Lantern Park Specialty Care of Coralville at the age of 74 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Leonard Holmes; and a brother-in-law, William Severs. Janice is survived by 1 brother, Richard (Dee) Holmes of Bluegrass, Iowa; 1 sister, Mary (Herbert) Freese of North Liberty; a sister-in-law, Cheryl Holmes of Ohio; 2 nephews: Adrian (Jamie) Holmes of Iowa City and Chris Holmes of Cleveland, OH; 4 nieces: Katharine (Gary) Layman of Middlesburg, OH, Sheila (Mark) Loveland of Davenport, Cynthia (Kevin) Marx of North Liberty, and Jennifer (Dong) Banh of Ankeny; 7 great-nieces and nephews; and 5 great-great nieces and nephews.
The burial will take place at Willow Lawn Cemetery in Plainfield. Memorials may be directed to the family.
