Janet Elaine Sawyer was born on July 18, 1924, in Dysart, the daughter of Charles and Albena Frances (Chudlic) Krafka. She grew up on the family farm two and a half miles southwest of Dysart. Janet graduated from Dysart High School in 1942. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College and was in the Pi Tau Phi Sorority. Janet began teaching in a one-room school house in Gladbrook before teaching in Dysart. On September 11, 1947, she was united in marriage to Warren Arthur Messer. The couple had four children. Warren died on July 30, 1972. Janet was then married to Warren Virgil Sawyer on August 2, 1975. The couple made their home in Dysart before moving to Hudson in 2009. Warren died on December 23, 2011. Janet was a member of Zion Lutheran Church where she was involved with the Hannah Circle and Altar Guild. She also volunteered at Sunnycrest Nursing home and tutored students. Janet died at the age of 92 on Monday, September 19, 2016, at her home in Hudson. She was preceded in death by her parents; Charles and Albena Krafka; two husbands, Warren Messer and Warren Sawyer; two sisters, Arlene Palmer and Vivian Jeanette Krafka; and a granddaughter, Lori Hardin. Janet is survived by four children, Craig (Jennifer) Messer of Gilbert, Arizona, Jan (Corene) Messer of Manchester, Capi (Robert) Lewis of Montezuma, and Cara (Allan Dean) Johnson of Hudson; two brothers, Robert and Richard Krafka; seven grandchildren; five step grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; eleven step great grandchildren; and four step great great grandchildren.
The burial will take place in Dysart Cemetery. Please direct memorials to Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart or St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Hudson.
