James Pollard

July 22, 1927 - May 15, 2016

James Pollard, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 15, 2016 after a long battle with cancer. A memorial visitation will be held 11 A.M. to 1 P.M., Friday, May 20 at Staves Memorial United Methodist Church, 2747 E. Madison, Des Moines, IA 50317. An inurnment will follow at 2 P.M. at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Jim was born on July 22, 1927 to Alva and Alma Pollard in Englewood, Colorado. As a boy, Jim lived on a farm for several years outside Ithaca, New York. He traveled the country extensively with his father in the 1930’s working construction. In 1939, the family returned to Albia, Iowa and in the early 1940’s settled in the Des Moines area.

Jim graduated from East High School in Des Moines in 1945. After graduation, he went directly into the military. Jim honorably served in the Army during World War II. Upon his return home, Jim worked several jobs before finding what he called, “the best job in the world.” Jim worked for 33 years as a letter carrier delivering mail for the United States Postal Service. He held several positions over his career in the National Association of Letter Carriers, serving as the Local 352 Union Steward.

Jim will be remembered for his craft as a woodsman. He built the entire family house by hand, starting in 1951 and finishing in 1987. Jim enjoyed his career as a letter carrier, and while walking the mail route could make you smile with his conversations. He even had two special workers that helped him deliver mail: Inky and Gidget, the neighborhood dogs that would walk along with him as he worked. Jim also enjoyed reading in his spare time.

Jim is preceded in death by his wives, Vernona (Morrissey) and Mary Beth (French); his parents, Alva and Ollie Pollard; and his siblings and their spouses, Lester (Margaret), Ed (Phyllis), Bob (Phyllis Jean), and Alice (Lincoln) Coffey.

Jim is survived by his loving daughters, Pauline (Doug) Manchester and Terri Pollard; granddaughter, Carol Davis; great-grandchildren, Rodney Seward, Jr. and Marly Bright; and his buddy, Scooter, a Jack Russell-Terrier.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa in memory of his love for our four legged friends.
