James Hubert Exline, Sr. of Guthrie Center, IA, 73, died of heart ailments on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. A celebration of life service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 5th at Brooks Funeral Care – University Chapel in Clive with visitation one hour prior beginning at 10 a.m. The interment will be held 1 p.m., the same day, at the Lorimor Cemetery in Lorimor, Iowa.
James was born January 11, 1943 to Hubert C. and Claracy E. (Rhone) Exline in Des Moines, Iowa. He was educated in Des Moines and Pleasantville Schools through high school and raised in the Des Moines area. In March of 1964 at the age of 21, James entered The United States Navy where he received the National Defense, Vietnam Service and Vietnamese Campaign Medals. He was also awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon. He was honorably discharged Petty Officer Third Class ADR (Aviation Machinist’s Mate Reciprocating Engine Mechanic) in March of 1968 from his active duty where he then transferred to the Naval Reserves. After the reserves he spent most of his work life as a truck driver.
James was an all-around nice, conversational guy who had great people skills. He enjoyed sharing memories and stories of the past and present times. He was interested in and searched his family history and genealogy. He looked forward to family gatherings, fishing, hunting, old country music, western movies and shows. He is our Dad, Grandpa, Great-Grandpa, Brother, Uncle, Cousin and Friend who will continue to live on in our hearts and be a part of the memories we will continue to share.
James is survived by his children, Velvet (Chad) Cordaro, James (Christene) Exline Jr., Lonna Kyle, Mel (Lori) Long, Debbie Cockerham, Rodger Brown and Bill Long; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; sister, Barbara Williams; brother, Jack Exline; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Judy Exline Thomas; and twin siblings, Paulette and Paul Exline.
The family would like to acknowledge Chaplain Jason Pool with Suncrest Hospice for his support and words of comfort during this time and Brooks Funeral Care, Theresa Dolan, F.D. and the staff for all their help in making our father’s final arrangements exactly as hoped for and more.
