Jack Wendell Whitlow, 74, passed away peacefully November 19, 2016 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
He was born March 13, 1942 to the marriage of Jack A. Whitlow and Eleanor Rash. A lifelong resident of Des Moines, Jack was a drywall contractor, having learned skills from his father and grandfather.
Jack served in the Army from 1967 to 1969 and received a purple heart for wounds received in combat in Viet Nam.
On October 18, 2002 Jack married Catherine Coppes in Des Moines. The following year they traveled to Russia where they adopted their daughter, Katie Lynn Whitlow.
Jack is survived by his wife Cathy; son Scott (Amanda) Whitlow of Johnston; daughter Katie Whitlow of West Des Moines; sisters Joann Pohlman of West Des Moines and Barbara (John) Alexander of Ankeny; granddaughters Olivia Whitlow and Grace Whitlow; and great-granddaughter Lea Whitlow. He was preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Anne Marie Whitlow.
The family will receive visitors Tuesday, November 22, 2016 from 5-7 p.m. at Merle Hay Funeral Home. His memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home.
