Jack Newberg

John “Jack” Edward Newberg, 87, of Johnston, died Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at the Mercy Hospice House in Johnston. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Merle Hay Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service.

Jack is survived by his four children John (Cate) Newberg, Susan (Tony) Weinschenk, Joseph (Angela) Newberg, and Kate Newberg (Doug Robinson); 5 grandchildren Andrew (Marlee), Allison, and Alex Newberg and Ashley and Evan Weinschenk; one sister Carol (Len) Colpo; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Marian and sister, Alice.

Jack was born on December 31, 1930 in Cicero, Illinois, the son of Edward and Edith (Simpson) Newberg. He graduated from Fenwick High School in Oak Park, IL. After high school, he worked in insurance for a brief time before going to serve in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. On November 25, 1961, he married Marian Rita Smyth. For over 50 years he worked in the insurance industry, retiring at the age of 77.

Jack was known to be an exceptional story teller and had a wonderful sense of humor. He loved spending time visiting with others and being with his family. He enjoyed golfing, traveling, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago White Sox fan. His family knew him as a “Jack of all trades”. He achieved sobriety for nearly 33 years and accomplished that with the help and support of his fellow AA friends, of which he helped and supported as well.
