Ivan John Averhoff was born June 11, 1938, in Waterloo, Iowa, son of Edgar and Esther (Weinberg) Averhoff. His family moved to the farm in 1947 and Ivan graduated from Dunkerton High School with the Class of 1956. On October 25, 1957, he married the love of his life, Mary Jane Demmel at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Ivan worked for John Deere as a Pattern Maker from September 1956 until his retirement in 1993. He volunteered for the NE Iowa Food Bank from 1993-2012 and helped children with reading and math skills at Dunkerton Elementary School. Ivan loved to “Rock Hound” with his family in search of gems, fossils and historical artifacts. He and the family traveled across the Midwest and Western United States hunting rocks while walking across fields and along streams in Iowa searching for artifacts. Ivan enjoyed ice fishing and was an avid canoeist. Ivan also served at St. John’s in a number of capacities including Trustee, Church Council Member and Deacon.

Ivan passed away on Sunday, December 17, 2017, at Unity Point Health-Allen Memorial Hospital at the age of 79 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a granddaughter, Nikki. Ivan is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary; three sons: Charles John (Joanne) Averhoff of Waverly, Darryl James (Shimen) Averhoff of Shell Rock, and Alan Jerald (Joanne) of Cedar Rapids; 9 grandchildren: Adam (Olivia) Amanda, Lee, Uriah, Matthew (Jen), Britteny (Nathan), Alyssa, Jenna, and Ashlynn; 8 great-grandchildren: Trey, Breanna, Rhylin, Rhyker, Maverick, Brooklyn, Jadelyn, and Ella; and a brother, Arnold (Karen) Averhoff of Waterloo.
