Harold Vern DeGeus, 96, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on August 7, 2016 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
He was born in Pella, Iowa on November 17, 1919 and grew up in Monroe, Iowa, the youngest of four children.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.
He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army from October 1941 to November 1945.
Harold married Jennie Van Dyk while serving. After leaving the service, they made their home in Des Moines until her death in 1991. They had three children, Donna, Mike, and Doug.
He made his living as a Master carpenter. If you wanted something made of wood, he would make it happen. He often claimed that he was busier during retirement than in his working years.
In 2011, Alzheimer’s began to take its toll. He moved to Fort Wayne and, after a brief stay with Mike and Laraine, took up residence at The Harbour Assisted Living of Fort Wayne, where he remained until his passing.
Harold is survived by Donna (Dick) Steward of Addison, Illinois; Mike (Laraine) DeGeus of Churubusco, Indiana; and Doug DeGeus of The Dalles, Oregon; plus six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation, American Diabetes Association, or the National Stroke Association.
