Gladys Marie Johnson

July 9, 1922 - February 26, 2016

Gladys Marie Johnson was born July 9, 1922 south of Milo, Iowa to Dewey and Pearl Whitlow. She passed away in peace on Friday, February 26, 2016 in Indianola, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse, in 2000. Surviving family includes one sister, Betty (Ron) Benware from Mesa, Arizona and nephew, Vernon Traster. She has two sons, John (Linda) Johnson from Indianola and Paul and Tina Johnson from Independence, Missouri. Grandchildren include Kurt Johnson, Joni (Curt) Swanson, Cheryl (Wayde) Burk, Penny Porter and Jim Clark, and Jill Wilkinson. She has twelve great grandchildren and eleven great-great grandchildren.

Gladys was a wonderful homemaker and hostess. She worked as a cook at Milo Public School, office worker for Wallace Farmer, and payroll clerk for Des Moines Public Schools. She taught Sunday School, attended neighborhood club, decorated cakes, raised gardens, enjoyed traveling, volunteered, and adored her pets. She was a member of Farmer’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Gladys enjoyed quality of life her last two years at Westview Care Center in Indianola.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. followed immediately by her memorial service at Tonini Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial will take place at Indianola IOOF Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Farmer’s Chapel United Methodist Church.
