Gladys (Derichs) Garnett, 97, passed away on November 23, 2016 at Ramsey Village in Des Moines, IA as a result of Alzheimer’s. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, December 1st at Brooks South Town Chapel at Sunset. A private entombment will be held the following day at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Gladys was born July 10, 1919 to Phillip and Della (Miller) Derichs in Paradise, North Dakota. She was the youngest of three girls until her little brother was born. She moved to Iowa in 1937 shortly after graduating high school. She was married in 1940 and with this union came one son, Roy Shaw, Jr. She later remarried James Garnett in 1965. She worked as a Customer Relations Supervisor for Iowa Power and Light until her retirement in 1984.
She enjoyed cooking, gardening, traveling and simply being outdoors and enjoying life. Gladys and Jim traveled 49 states in their R.V. together where they took photos, videos and shared unforgettable memories. She was a caring and loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be missed.
Gladys is survived by her husband of 51 years, James Garnett; son, Roy (Theresa) Shaw Jr. of Florida; 3 grandchildren; 3 step-children, Douglas (Rhonda) Garnett, Deborah Buse, Daniel Garnett and their 5 children; 5 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Mary Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Francis and Pauline; and brother, William.
Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Greater Iowa Chapter. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the staff of Ramsey Village for their continued support and care of Gladys in the last three years.
