George Lamotta

June 25, 1922 - January 23, 2016

George, 93, passed away January 23, 2016 at Urbandale Health Care Center. His funeral mass will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, at St. Anthony Catholic Church with entombment at Merle Hay Mausoleum. His family will greet friends from 4-7 p.m., with the rosary recited at 6:30, Tuesday, at Merle Hay Funeral Home.

George Joseph Lamotta, the son of James and Antoinette (Marturello) Lamotta, was born June 25, 1922 in Des Moines, Iowa. He attended St. Anthony School and graduated from Lincoln High School. George worked for Des Moines Public Schools for 39 years.

George enjoyed supporting St. Anthony Catholic Church and School. He liked spending time at the Pioneer Columbus Senior Center. George loved his family, and especially enjoyed spending time with his great-grandchildren, Caroline and Cate. After his wife Mary passed in 2011, he lived with his primary caregivers, daughter Mary Jo and son-in-law Keith, who took care of him for 2 ½ years.

George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 65 years, Mary; his brother, Joseph; and his sister, Sister Mary Annunciata.

Those left to remember George are his daughter, Mary Jo (Keith) Wollesen; granddaughters, Christal (Chris) Cataldo and Michelle (Rob) Sagar; great-grandchildren: Caroline and Cate Cataldo, Brady Harper, and Emmie Sagar; and his son Jim Lamotta and his family.

The family wishes to thank Urbandale Health Care Center for the wonderful care they provided George.

Memorial contributions may be left to the St. Anthony School Library.

Dad, it will be hard not seeing you daily after seeing you nearly every day for all my life. I have comfort knowing I will see you again. ~ Mary Jo
