Gary Alonzo Smith

Gary Alonzo Smith, 74, of Colfax, died Saturday, February 18, 2017 at his home.

Gary is survived by his wife Garnett; three sons Doug (Debbie) of Waukee and Todd (Chrissy) of Des Moines, and Sean (LeAnna) of DeSoto; sister Judi (Rod) Graybill of Newark, New York; 8 grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren with one on the way.

He is preceded in death by his parents and an infant grandson.

Gary was born on February 3, 1943 in Des Moines, the son of Frank and Edna Smith. He was raised in Carlisle, where he graduated from high school in 1961.

Gary enjoyed many things in life, boating, playing darts, watching his children and grandchildren play in their many sports. People may remember that at one time Gary was a top notch dart player in the city of Des Moines.  We owned Junction Station in Johnston and that was probably Gary’s most favorite job, because it mixed work and play.  He played on many dart teams and won several city championships in his time.  He spent the later part of his life as an independent delivery driver and his last position was that of a cashier at the Altoona Walmart.

There will be a Memorial for Gary on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at the Colfax Historical Society Building. We ask that friends and family join us from 2:00 to 4:00, with your memories of Gary.

Memorials may be made to the family.
