Eva J Brauninger July 8, 1931-December 13, 2016.
From humble beginnings as an accordion-playing, depression-era girl from a small farming town in Kansas, Eva went on to a life as a professional musician and teacher. She graduated from both Wichita State University and the Eastman School of Music, and toured with the Hormel All Girl Orchestra in 1953. While working as a music teacher and performer in Enid, Oklahoma, she met and married a local violinist, James Brauninger. The Brauninger family moved to Des Moines in 1962, and the musical couple joined the Des Moines Symphony, where Eva served for 44 years as Principal Bassist. Eva taught string orchestra for many years in the West Des Moines Schools and retired in 2001. She then joined the Drake University faculty, teaching String Bass until 2013 while continuing to teach privately. Eva is survived by a sister, Doris, her three children, Kent, Kris and Jana, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
