Emmitt Johnson Sr.

Emmitt Johnson, Sr. son of the late William Johnson and Hattie Grant Johnson, was born on July 17, 1931 in Mansfield. Louisiana. He departed this life on Monday, March 12, 2018. He was 86 years old.
Emmitt accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at St. James AME Church in Mansfield, LA.
Emmitt graduated from Desoto High School and later attended Spalding Business College in Shreveport, LA. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in December of 1950 and proudly served his country as well as serving in the Korean War.
Emmitt married his High School sweetheart – Mary B. (Green) Johnson. He is now in the loving arms of his beloved wife. From this beautiful union, he had two children; Emmitt Johnson, Jr. and Sheila Johnson.
After moving to Des Moines, he soon became a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church and was a long time Trustee. Emmitt loved working in the church and was one of its best handyman. He retired from American Motor as a driver and was the first black bus driver in Des Moines, Iowa and also worked as a Contractor for Green Construction Company.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting and watching sports of all kinds. He was a gentle man and would give you the shirt off his back. He had such a sense of humor and made everyone laugh.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his son, Emmitt Johnson, Jr. (Des Moines, Iowa) and daughter Sheila Johnson (Houston, Texas), his sister, Annie L. Howard (Solomon) of Shreveport, Louisiana; sister-in-law’s; Sharon Collier (Des Moines, IA), Rosie Bennett (Houston, TX), Jean Ary (Des Moines, IA); Ann Green (Houston, TX), brother-in-law’s ; Columbus Green (Houston, TX); Lawrence Green (Houston, TX), Willis Green (Houston, TX); special nephews Gregory Howard (Shreveport, LA) Keith Collier, Jr. (Des Moines, IA), Greg Johnson (Oakpark, MI) and a number of other nieces and nephews; cousin-in-law Mary Graham (Los Angeles, CA); dear friend Chris Green, and special “play daughter” – Renee Hardman (West Des Moines, IA).
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 22, 2018. Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 a.m., both at Union Missionary Baptist Church, 1200 McCormick Street, Des Moines, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent to Union Missionary Baptist Church.
