Newton Lynn Bowers, Jr., the son of Newton Bowers, Sr. and Alice (Timberman) Bowers, was born January 28, 1933 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  He graduated from Yale University in 1954 with his Bachelor’s Degree, majoring in Mathematics, and the University of Minnesota in 1965 with his Doctorate.  Newton proudly served in the U.S. Navy.  Although he began his teaching career at the University of Michigan, Newton moved to Des Moines in 1969 to work at Drake University.  At Drake, he was a professor in the Actuarial Science Department for over 25 years until his retirement.  He was named Iowa Professor of the Year in 1992.

Outside of teaching, Newt loved to play bridge, playing in tournaments throughout the country and locally at the Bridge House.  He was an avid reader, particularly interested in history, and a constant presence on the sidelines at Drake basketball games.  He loved to travel with Jean, his wife of 25 years.  Most recently, he was an active member of the Walnut Ridge community where he lived the last several years.

Newton was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, David.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; daughters: Carolyn (Mark) Clark and Jennifer (Nick) Chambers; stepson, Doug Hoskins; grandchildren: Ryan, Katie, Ben, Michael, Alex, and Mary Lynn (Timmy); great-grandchild, Sydney; and sister, Barb (Ed) Haugland.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Drake University or the American Heart Association.
