Douglas Paul Mehlhaus passed away at the age of 74 years on Thursday, November 24, 2016, following a long battle with cancer. Funeral service will be on Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at 10:30 am at Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart with Visitation on Monday, November 28, 2016, at the church. Burial will be at Gnagy Cemetery in Rural Dysart.

Doug Mehlhaus was born in Vinton, Iowa on January 19, 1942, son of Harold & Leonora (Seebach) Mehlhaus. He graduated from Dysart High School with the Class of 1960. He attended the University of Iowa where he played basketball. Doug was united in marriage to Mary Mapes on July 7, 1974. Doug farmed with his father and brother until his retirement in 2012.

Doug was active in his community having served on the County FSA Board, Dysart Rural Fire Board, and on the Benton County Pioneer Cemetery Board. He was a Monroe Township Trustee and also in charge of Gnagy Cemetery. Doug was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart having served on the church council, taught Sunday School, as an advisor for Luther League and, presently, on the Endowment Committee as Chairperson. Doug was also on the Board for the Dysart Golf Course.

Doug is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mary; brother-in-law, Ronald (Mary) Mapes; sisters-in-law, June Mehlhaus and Gladys Blevins; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, John; brothers-in-law, Milton Mapes and Donald Blevins; and sister-in-law, Sandy Mapes.

Memorials may be given in Doug’s name to Tama County Relay for Life, Cedar Valley Hospice, Zion Lutheran Church or directed to the family.
