Doris Anita Ummel, 87, died Thursday, April 6, 2017, at the Village at Legacy Pointe in Waukee, Iowa. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 22, at New Hope United Methodist Church, 4525 Beaver Ave., Des Moines. The family will receive friends during the hour before the services. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Gardens.
Doris was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, to Alva and Edna Jackson. Following her father’s death in 1934, she moved with her family to a rural area near Stockton, Kansas, and later into Stockton. She graduated from Stockton High School in 1948 and worked in the Rooks County Clerk’s office in Stockton, and then moved to Centralia, Illinois, to work for Gulf Oil Company.
On Nov. 22, 1952, she married Donald Ummel in Stockton. They had met at the wedding of their good friends, Wayne and Waneta Douce, when Doris was maid of honor and Don was best man.
Doris and Don lived in Kansas, Nebraska, and Vermont before moving to Des Moines in 1961. They were charter members of New Hope UMC, where Doris volunteered as a Sunday school teacher, the church wedding coordinator, and as a member of the board of trustees building committee during the sanctuary renovation project. She was instrumental in choosing colors for the stained glass windows, carpeting, and upholstery for the pews in the new sanctuary. She and Don also were members of the Merry Mates couples fellowship club.
Doris was outgoing and friendly. She was a wonderful cook, famous for her potato salad as well as homemade cookies that filled care packages mailed to distant family or holiday plates delivered to neighbors. She was a faithful letter writer who never forgot to send a birthday or anniversary card. She enjoyed playing cards, taking drives to see the lilacs at Ewing Park on Mother’s Day, lunch dates with Don, and following the Iowa Hawkeyes, Iowa State Cyclones, and her beloved St. Louis Cardinals. But most of all, she loved watching her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren grow into the people they are today.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Don, of Des Moines; two daughters, Debbie (Mark) Ediger, of Washington, D.C., and Dawn (John) Goodlove, of Marion, Iowa; a son, Denny (Robyn) of Urbandale, Iowa; six grandchildren, Zachary (Jennifer) Ediger, Amy (Jay) Clendenin, Ashley (Jeff) Ediger, Ross (Christina) Ediger, Jennifer Ummel, and Douglas Ummel; six great-grandchildren, Brett Ediger, Elizabeth Ediger, Owen Clendenin, Beckett Hatt, Remi Ediger, and Dylan Talo; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Ivan and Wes; and a sister, Aldene.
