Doreen, 80, born October 12, 1936 on British Channel Island of Guernsey, passed away February 20, 2017 in Des Moines.
As a toddler during wartime, she and her mother were last to leave by ship before the Germans’ arrival. Then while in Plymouth, England, her family thankfully did not follow instructions to go to an air raid shelter that took a direct hit.
Doreen married Clarence Schmit in 1958, who was in the Air Force and has since passed away. She raised four children with quiet determination: Daughter Deb (Chuck) Langrock, Grandchildren Matt and Ashley; Daughter Michele (Jon) DePhillips; Daughter Kim (Ernie) Gillum, Granddaughters Rachel and Laura; Son Patrick (Krissy) Schmit, Grandson Joseph. Doreen is also survived by three great-grandchildren and her husband of 33 years, Louis Kershbaumer.
Warmest thanks to Ginger Adams, her caregiver. Doreen, primarily a homemaker, also enjoyed travel, fine dining, bingo, casinos, and her dogs.
A memorial visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Thursday evening at Brooks Funeral Care in Clive.
