Donald Chauncy Kennedy was born May 16, 1932, near Sparta, Wisconsin, son of Leslie and Vina (Bass) Kennedy. He was raised on the family dairy farm and graduated from Sparta High School with the Class of 1950. Don was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean Conflict serving in Detroit, Michigan, at the Fort Custer Training Center. During his time there, he met Geraldine Atkins and the two were married on October 2, 1954. After Don’s discharge from military service, the two moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where he was employed by John Deere. He began in the Foundry but was promoted to Supervisor for the last 13 years of his work retiring on May 31, 1985. Following retirement, Don worked for the Silver Spur on Highway 63 repairing boots and doing other leather work such as fashioning belts, holsters and ammo belts. In their younger years, Don and Geraldine enjoyed competition archery, square dance and music. They had their own band featuring Don on accordion, their son, Kenneth on guitar, and Geraldine on guitar and as lead singer. Don was also an avid hunter and fisherman.

Don passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017, at the age of 85 years at the Covenant Medical Center Emergency Room. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Kenneth Lee Kennedy; and three brothers: Leslie, Lloyd and Harold. Don is survived by his wife of 63 years; his daughter, Debra (William) Jungling of LaPorte City; his daughter-in-law, Carla Kennedy of LaPorte City; 6 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; his sister, Jean Tucker of Aplington; 4 “acquired children”, Nick (Laurie) Wilson and Craig (Teri) Strein; and his beloved dog, Pee Wee.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
