Donald Broman, 68, went to heaven to be reunited with his granddaughter, Amber, on April 28, 2017.
He is remembered by his wife of 35 years, Lois; children: Lisa (Rex) Gray, Adam (Kristy) Broman; grandchildren: Aidan Gray, Charlotte Broman; 2 brothers: Jerry (Joy) Broman, Roger Broman; sisters-in-law: Bobbie Broman and Jane (Craig) Harding; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death are his parents: Raymond and Louise Broman; infant son, Donald Jr.; granddaughter, Amber Gray; and brother, Doug Broman.
Upon graduation from high school in Lincoln, NE, Don enlisted in the Navy, serving during the Vietnam war. Following his service, Don held several maintenance jobs, finally securing the position of building engineer at Farmland Insurance. The company was acquired by Nationwide Insurance and Don retired as a maintenance supervisor after 30 years of service. Don also served for approximately 13 years in the Iowa Air National Guard in Des Moines.
Don had many outside interests. For years he enjoyed league bowling, even obtaining a perfect 300 game. He had an interest in antique cars and was a member of the Des Moines Region Antique Automobile Club of America. He also enjoyed painting and building model cars. He was always adding to his woodworking tools so it would be easier to make bird houses, squirrel feeders and colorful whirly gigs. Most recently, he moved on to painting fishing lures which he was hoping to use this summer from his new boat. When inspired, Don was an excellent artist, drawing portraits of many family members. He also tried his hand at color pencil drawings of the cars belonging to friends.
Probably the most satisfying thing Don did was to start his own handyman business after his retirement. He loved being his own boss, but most of all he gained great satisfaction from solving problems for his customers and sharing with them all his expertise. He always gave them his very best.
Don was very proud of becoming a Christian as an adult. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. After his cancer diagnosis, Don was at peace with his choice to put his life in God’s hands.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, May 30th, 2017 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church: 8301 Aurora Ave, Urbandale. A visitation will take place Monday, May 29, 2017 from 4-6 PM, also at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in memory of Don Broman.
