Don Lau

September 18, 1928 - February 22, 2017

Don G. Lau, the son of Gordon and Opal (Phelps) Lau, was born on September 18, 1928, in Delhi, Iowa.  Don’s family moved to Waterville, Iowa at an early age and he graduated from Waterville High School in 1946.  He enlisted in the Army and upon his discharge, enrolled at Upper Iowa University where he received a teaching degree.  While there, he met and married Arlene French of Elkader.  Don taught and coached for 3 years in Delhi, Iowa, followed by another 3 years in Shellsburg, Iowa.  In August of 1959, the family moved to Traer where Don was employed as a teacher for 30 years.  He coached his first couple of years in Traer, but gave that up to become the athletic director.  Don was active in community affairs, serving on the city council, became mayor, and was on various committees.  He and Arlene managed the Traer swimming pool for 10 years.  He was also active at St. Luke Lutheran Church.  Don died at the age of 88 on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gerald of Pasco, Washington and Curtis of Baggs, Wyoming; and a sister-in-law, Mary Lau of Dubuque, Iowa.  Don is survived by his wife, Arlene of Traer and their two children, Cheryl West of Story City and Don A. Lau of Wilburton, Oklahoma.  He was a proud grandfather to Eric (Amanda) West, Jonathon (Beth) West, Leslie Lau, and Kristi (Matt) McGinn, and to his great grandchildren, Shea West and Madison and Landon McGinn.  He is also survived by two brothers, David (Pat) Lau of Fort Madison and James Lau of Dubuque, and a sister-in-law, Davene Lau of Baggs, Wyoming.  Don will be remembered for being a die-hard Cubs fan, his daily walks downtown, his love of both people and animals, his love for family, and his smile.
