Dianne L. Melton passed away June 6, 2017 at Fountain West Care Center. She was born May 15, 1947 to Jake and Violet (Vi) Melton. She attended St. Augustin grade school, then graduated from high school at St. Joseph’s Academy in 1965 with honors. She was a class president, a cheerleader, and a member of the Stepperetts. Dianne attended college for two years at the University of Northern Iowa, then, moved to California and graduated from the College of Notre Dame with a BA in teaching Montessori. Her education took her down many paths, as she taught in California and Iowa and created a course titled Fantasy – The World of Wonder that was loved by all who had the privilege to take it from her.
Dianne thrived on adventure, which led her to become an international flight attendant for World Airways. Married for five years to Ty Peters in the early 70’s, she and Ty journeyed to Alaska where they established, owned, and operated a fishing business.
Dianne had a great appreciation for the arts! In Los Gatos, California, she and Ty owned Moonstone Galleries, where they displayed and sold fine, and sometimes rare, paintings, sculptures, and antiques. Working at the DSM Art Center as a docent, tour guide, and a security guard gave Dianne great joy in her later years.
Some of Dianne’s many other talents included being the first female tobacco representative for Glaser Bros. in California, modeling for Black Velvet and for sports wear companies, acting in community theatres, wherever she lived (she made a great Calamity Jane!), doing radio and TV voice over, working as a newspaper reporter, producing and narrating her original fantasy CDs, Moon Magic, Beyond the Looking Glass, and The Legendary Evergreen, all of which focused on the arts and the historic and scientific facts about each subject matter. They were created for radio broadcasts and college courses.
Dianne also loved writing short children’s fantasy stories and poetry. Writing Haiku became her passion. One Haiku example: Peachy pink sunset/grows as twilight draws near/stippling the sky.
Dianne is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Tom Wheeler of Clive, IA, her sister-in-law Lise Melton, brother-in-law Scott Vance, five nieces, three nephews, and five great-nieces and -nephews, and many lifelong friends and extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents Jake and Violet (Vi) Melton, her sister Dawn Vance, and her brothers Mark and Greg Melton.
Dianne’s body has been cremated. A memorial celebration of her life will be held at Merle Hay Funeral Home 4400 Merle Hay Rd. Des Moines, IA, Saturday June 10, 2017 at 1:30 pm.
