Dean O. Barrett of Madrid, Iowa passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 20th, at the age of 83 surrounded by family. He had Alzheimer’s or lewy body dementia for about 6 years.

Dean was born on January 14th, 1933 and raised in Luther, Iowa. He graduated from high school then enrolled at Boone Junior College (DMACC). He served in the Army for two years. In September of 1953 he married his high school sweetheart, Correne M. (Crabtree). He was a devoted father to three children; Dennis, Dena (Brian) Luksetich, and Jan. They had 4 grandchildren, Alexandra, Logan, Katie and Meredith. They fondly remember him for telling them to “love one another.”

He worked in the printing industry for over fifty years. He began at The Madrid Register News and retired while at the Printer Inc.

He was a skilled wood craftsman building custom kitchen cabinets, a sailboat and a grandfather clock. He enjoyed making the grandchildren wooden toys, puzzles and alphabet blocks.

He was a dog lover, avid reader, gardener, bird watcher and enjoyed bicycling on the High Trestle Trail. He loved to joke and tease.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, John Barrett, Helen Zenor, and brother Larry. Survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, brothers, Jerry (Sandy), John (Diane), and sister Fern (Mahlon) Shell.

The family would like to give special thanks to the VA Community Living Center for the exceptional care that they gave him.
