Craig A. Light

Craig Light, 58, aka “Mr. Urbandale,” died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on December 11, 2017, following a brief illness.

Craig was born in Des Moines, Ia., on December 22, 1958, to Monica and Wayne Brafford. A football standout at Urbandale High School, he went on to play at Iowa Central College, receiving the coveted Algoe Award for “attitude, grades, athletic achievement, and sportsmanship.” Craig earned his Bachelor’s degree in Business from Iowa State and his MBA from Drake. He volunteered tirelessly. While he worked in sales, management, and finances for a number of different companies – including Homewood Suites of Ankeny, Wells Fargo Financial Leasing, Piper Jaffary, and both Newton and Urbandale Chambers of Commerce — all of Craig’s jobs had one thing in common: utilizing his amazing people-skills.

Craig Light loved EVERYBODY, and everybody loved him right back. But Carol Boals Light loved him best. Although they went to UHS and graduated together, they didn’t really meet until nearly 20 years after Pomp and Circumstance was played. Carol and Craig discovered their mutual love for and knowledge of music while working on the 20 Year Class Reunion Committee. Their common interests grew into friendship, which grew into love, and they married on 9/16/00. They also celebrate CJC Day, which was based on his license plate letters (“Carol Joins Craig Day”) They were “besties” as well as husband and wife for the next 17 years.

Craig is also survived by his mother, Monica; a son, Nick and daughter-in-law Megan; brothers Rob and Todd; and step-daughter, Annie (Brian) Bauman. He was preceded in death by his father Wayne Brafford, and step-father Bruce Light.

As glowing Facebook praises are pouring in for Craig, a good friend once said, “The body was big, but not big enough to hold the heart.”

A Memorial service will be held for Craig at Merle Hay Funeral Home at 3:00pm on Friday, December 15, 2017. Carol and Craig’s family will meet friends and colleagues at the funeral home at 1:00pm. Internment of Craig’s cremains will take place at McDivitt Grove Cemetery following the service.

Memorial contributions and gifts may be made in Craig’s name to Carol Boals Light.
