Chauncey Wendell Bailey, Des Moines, passed away on December 26, 2016. He was born February 27, 1919 to the late Willie and James Sr. Bailey. He graduated from North High School in 1938. After graduation, he worked for the Long Island Railroad for 17 years and the Bookie Packing Company for over 24 years. After retirement, he worked as a Sky Cap at the airport, and as a maintenance engineer and counselor at the YMCA.
Chauncey served in the U.S. Army during WWII. While stationed in Riverside, CA, he met and married Brigette Duhe. Their union produced 3 children, Lorelei Waqia, Chauncey Wendell Jr., and Stephen Craig. He is the proud grandfather of 7; and great-grandfather to 8.
As an avid fan of sports and games, Chauncey was compelled and loved to compete. He golfed from 1946-1980, winning several tournaments. He had an unorthodox style, but his bowling talent earned him many wins and garnered him induction into the Iowa Senior Citizen Bowling Hall of Fame on 2 occasions.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul AME Church on December 31, 2016 at 1PM. Visitation will take place one hour prior at the same location.
