Charlene M. Davis

August 21,1933 - April 18, 2016

Charlene Marie Davis, 82, of Waukee, passed from this life into the next Monday, April 18, 2016. Born on August 21, 1933, in Greene County, Iowa, she was the oldest of two children of Marvin and Dorothy (White) Anderson, who, along with her sister, Shirley Mae Kiefer, preceded her in death.

She was an educator all her life. She made her younger sister “play” school, assisted the teacher in her one-room schoolhouse with the younger students, graduated high school as salutatorian, completed a two-year teaching degree at the Iowa State Teachers College, taught school in Dallas Center and Altoona, established the library at the Altoona Elementary School, worked in many other school and public libraries, and retired from the Bureau of Nutrition and Health Services of the Iowa Department of Education.

Her three children were the jewels in her crown and all survive her: Dan of Stuart, IA, Shelly (Beth Olson) of Milton, MA, and Doug (Tara) of West Des Moines. She absolutely adored her grandsons, Corbin and Creighton of West Des Moines. Survivors also include her aunt Eula Mae Hicks of Churdan, cousins, a niece and nephews, and dear friends.

She loved reading, music, the theater, travel, chocolate, QVC, peanut butter, the water, and angel food cake.

Her sense of humor and wit were with her to the end. Most recently she loved this quote, “If I had known I would live this long I would have taken better care of myself!”

She was blessed with and gave thanks for good health much of her life. Only in these last six to twelve months did she begin to precipitously decline physically while developing a perforated bowel and congestive heart failure. After her last hospitalization and rehab, she returned home for a week with the supportive services of Mercy Hospice. In the early morning of her third day of respite care at Mercy Hospice in Johnston, her spirit flew free from her body and she returned home to the very heart of God.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests that any donations in Charlene’s name be made to:

The Kate Goldman Education Fund at the Des Moines Community Playhouse, 831 42nd Street, Des Moines, Iowa 50312.
