Carolyn Ruth Schmidt was born in Ralls County near Center, Missouri. Also known as “Cary”, she was the fifth born child of seven total children to John and Pearl Mae (Nichols) Schmidt.
As a young lady, she married J.A. Bartlett and they had three children, Rachel Ellen, Bobbie Jo and a son, John Anson who died in infancy. They divorced shortly after, and she moved with her young daughters to Council Bluffs, Iowa where she worked as a cook and waitress in a small café. It was there she met Joseph “Kenny” Kenneth Roney, who had three daughters of his own, Mary Ellen, Janice Colleen and Virginia Ann. They were married October 31, 1952. Together they had three more children, Carolyn “Kay”, Joseph Kenneth Jr. and Timothy Monroe.
While living on an acreage in Council Bluffs, she was always busy with a VERY large garden, raising chickens and rearing children. She was involved in the PTA, Trinity Methodist Church and choir, and Cub Scout Pack #107.
She and Kenny left the acreage and moved to Des Moines because Kenny was transferring to continue his job with the railroad. While in Des Moines, she worked as a school crossing guard, Meals on Wheels driver and even ran a home business making a large variety of baked goods, including wedding cakes. Her amazing skills as a seamstress allowed her to expand her business to include not only making the bride’s dress but also the attendant’s and flower girl’s dresses in addition to catering the event.
In 2009, at the age of 82, she understood her need of a Savior and accepted the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross as full payment for her sin. Because of this, on October 24, 2016, after a long battle with blindness, Alzheimer’s disease and numerous strokes, she was able, with clear vision and a now perfect mind, to see her Savior face to face in heaven!
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Kenny; infant son, John Anson; parents; siblings, Elizabeth Collins, Florence Anderson, John Schmidt, Pearl Cowick, Barbara Ann Hoden and Ida Jean Wallace; two step-daughters, Ellen McCready and Janice Colleen Beckner; and a son-in-law, Chris Logsdon.
She is survived by 6 children, Virginia Roney (Wayne McCready) of Newport, NC, Ellen (Jerry) Hansen of Council Bluffs, Bobbie Jo (Ron) Telshaw of Omaha, Carolyn “Kay” (Chris/Henry Logsdon-Layher) Logsdon Layher of Douglas, WY, Joe (Debbie) Roney of Des Moines and Tim (Roberta) Roney of Des Moines; one step-daughter, Ginger Roney; 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews.
